Recording Clean Audio on Your Phone

How to Record a Clean Voiceover on Your Phone

Great audio makes a huge difference in how professional your video feels. The good news? You can capture clean, high-quality voiceover using nothing more than your phone and a quiet room. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide you can follow at home.

Quick overview: Find a quiet room, use your phone’s voice recorder, hold it about a hand’s length from your mouth, speak naturally, do 2–3 takes, and then send the audio file. I’ll take care of the rest—editing, cleanup, and timing it to the video.

🎧 1. Choose a Quiet Space

Start by picking a room that’s naturally quiet and not too echo-y:

  • Bedrooms, home offices, or closets with clothes are ideal.
  • Avoid kitchens, bathrooms, and large empty rooms that create echoes.
  • Turn off HVAC, fans, loud computers, and anything that hums or buzzes.
  • Let others in the house know you’ll be recording for a few minutes.

Pro tip: A walk-in closet full of clothes is basically a DIY recording studio. All that fabric helps absorb sound and reduce echo.

🎙️ 2. Use Your Phone’s Voice Recorder

You don’t need any special app—your phone already has what you need:

  • iPhone: Use the built-in Voice Memos app.
  • Android: Use Voice Recorder, Voice Notes, or your phone’s default recording app.

These apps record in high enough quality for professional-looking marketing videos once edited and cleaned up.

📱 3. Hold the Phone the Right Way

A few small details go a long way toward clean, consistent sound:

  • Hold the phone about 6–8 inches from your mouth (roughly a hand’s length).
  • Speak across the microphone, not straight into it, to avoid harsh “P” and “B” sounds.
  • Keep the phone steady and avoid moving it or tapping it while you talk.
  • Try to maintain the same distance the whole time.

🗣️ 4. Speak Naturally and Clearly

You don’t need to sound like a voice actor—just like a clear, relaxed version of yourself:

  • Read the script at a comfortable, natural pace. Don’t rush.
  • Stand or sit up straight and take a breath before each sentence.
  • Smile slightly as you speak—it actually changes your tone in a good way.
  • If you stumble on a word, pause, go back to the start of the sentence, and read it again. I’ll edit out the mistakes.

🎬 5. Record 2–3 Takes

Multiple takes give us options so we can choose the best performance:

  • Do at least two full takes of the script.
  • Try one version in your normal tone and one slightly slower and smoother.
  • If you feel comfortable, try a third with a bit more energy or emphasis.

Don’t worry about perfection. Natural, clear, and steady is much better than “over-performed.”

📤 6. Save and Send the Audio File

When you’re happy with a take (or a few), just share the file:

  • On iPhone: Open Voice Memos → tap the recording → tap the (more) icon → Share → choose Email, Messages, AirDrop, etc.
  • On Android: Open your recording app → select the recording → tap Share → choose Email, Messages, or another app.
  • Any of these file types work great: .m4a, .mp3, or .wav.

Once I have your audio, I’ll handle everything else: cleaning up background noise, cutting out mistakes, matching the pacing to the visuals, and adding music and final polish.

Your only job is to find a quiet room, follow the script, and speak comfortably. The result will be a professional voiceover that makes your video—and you—look and sound your best.
